Admission Requirements
Admission Criteria of UCR’s Graduate Admissions
- A bachelor's degree, or its equivalent, from an accredited institution. The degree must represent the completion of a program equivalent in subject matter and scholarship to that offered by the University of California.
- A minimum of a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) GPA in undergraduate years and in post baccalaureate work.
Department Requirements
We welcome all applicants with a strong background in mathematics. PhD applicants on the quarter system are expected to have taken at least 6 upper division courses or 4 upper division courses on a semester system in any of the following areas:
- Linear algebra
- Abstract algebra
- Real Analysis/Advanced Calculus
- Complex Analysis
- Topology
- Ordinary/Partial Differential Equations
- Numerical Analysis
- Probability
For students interested in Applied Mathematics, an additional course in modeling is preferred.
All classes should be proof based. We will consider applicants who are taking some of these courses at the time of application or will be taking them prior to graduation from their institution. Additional upper division math classes are preferable. The prerequisites for our courses can be found in the UCR catalog online here.
