Professor Mark Alber was given the "Outstanding Faculty Global Ambassador Award" at the award ceremony on May 20, 2023, by the UCR International Affairs. Such awards are given to faculty members who demonstrate a commitment to the global community through teaching, research, service, and worldwide engagement. Whether by supporting international students and scholars here on campus, by adding a global dimension to their teaching or research, or by encouraging students to participate in Education Abroad, UCR’s Global Ambassadors are champions of international education. They are committed to community engagement and inspire others to develop a global mindset. Among other activities, Prof. Alber served as Chair of the Organizing Committee of the Annual 2021 international Conference of the Society for Mathematical Biology (SMB2021), leading international conference in the field, which was organized by UCR and held online from June 13-17, 2021, due to the pandemic. Special emphasis of the SMB2021 was on the impact of Mathematical Biology on Translational Science & Promotion of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion all over the world. SMB2021 had close to 2,600 participants from 47 countries. Professor Alber was also selected recently for the 2023-24 Fulbright Scholar Award.
