Dr. Fredrick Park, Whittier College: In the first part of this talk, I will have a teaching demonstration on a topic from first year calculus. In the second part, I will discuss the role of sparsity in data science by looking at two applications. The first in machine learning, where I focus on neural network sparsification and compression. The second application will involve sparsity in the computer vision task of image segmentation. My experience with mentoring undergraduates in research occurs in the third part of the talk. Here, I will look at two case studies, one in imaging and the other in data clustering. Finally, I’ll talk about some future plans for this position related to teaching, research, and service.
