I will give an overview of interactions between cluster algebras (introduced by Fomin--Zelevinsky) and the study of totally positive matrices, that is, matrices with all minors positive. I will also mention recent results relating cohomology of the associated algebraic varieties to knot theory. No background on the above objects will be assumed. Based on joint work with Thomas Lam.
