A Small Sampling of our VAP & Graduate Student Alumni Outside of UCR

Michael Tureli is a Distinguished Professor at UC Davis. He graduated from UCR in 1972, he recently wrote to us about his UCR experience: "I was a working-class kid from Colton, the first of my extended family to go to college. UCR provided an incredible education in math, population genetics, ecology, and buddhism (my favorite subjects). I also remember fondly my introduction to art films from the campus film series. I've been a genetics professor at Davis for over 34 years now, and I always try to provide my promising students with the sort of encouragement I was given at Riverside."

A UCR alumnus who received his BA ('69), MA ('72) and PhD ('74) in Mathematics went on to accept a position as Assistant Professor of Mathematics at University of Tulsa. He then went on to do pioneering research and published several papers in Information Flow modeling for anti-air missile simulations as an Operations Research Analyst for the Naval Air Warfare Center in China Lake, California. After that position, he changed his focus to Artificial Intelligence and became Advisor for Artificial Intelligence to the NAWC Technical Director. He was one of the fathers of the research program in Artificial Neural Networks for the US Navy. Based on his design, Intel Inc. built the first Neural Computer Chip called the ETANN chip. The chip received national recognition in 1990 by PC Magazine as one of the three most innovative designs of the year. He holds several U.S. Patents associated with circuit design and learning algorithms in Artificial Neural Networks. In 2001, he retired from the Naval laboratory and is now a Senior Fellow Emeritus.

Another alumnus received all of his degrees in Mathematics from UCR (B.A. '63, M.A. '64, and Ph.D. '66). He began his professional career at the University of Missouri, Columbia. Subsequently, he joined the Applied Mathematics Department of the Aerospace Corporation where he focused on computer based modeling and simulation. He was the deputy manager for Systems Analysis and Costing when he left Aerospace to join R&D Associates (RDA) where he continued to work in the areas of modeling, simulation, and systems analysis. Eventually, he became involved in the design and implementation of advanced information systems applied to command and control systems for the Department of Defense. He held positions of Manager of the Mathematics and Computer Center, Project Manager and Chief Engineer of the Information Systems Division. Subsequently, he joined the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as Manager of Information Systems where he continued to be involved with the design and implementation of advanced information systems. While at JPL he served for eight years as a member of the U.S. Army's Science Board. He also served on several study panels of the National Academy of Sciences Naval Studies Board. He retired from JPL as Manager of JPL's non-NASA government business. Today, he continues a part-time relationship with JPL. He is a volunteer member of the L.A. Philharmonic Affiliates Speakers Bureau. He also serves on UCR's Gift Planning Committee.
