The Department of Mathematics invites applications and nominations for a tenured full professor position beginning July 1, 2017. Successful applicants will also occupy the newly endowed F. Burton Jones Chair. This position is open to all levels of full professorship.

Applications are welcome from those working in all areas of Pure Mathematics. A PhD in Mathematics is required. Applicants are expected to be leaders in their research fields, with demonstrated success as well as a vibrant outlook to their research programs. Applicants should also have excellent record of involvement and mentoring graduate students and junior faculty members. Responsibilities of this position include teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses and seminars, conducting scholarly research and participation in departmental and university service activities. Established criteria of the University of California will determine the salary and the level of appointment.

The chair was established by a generous endowment from the late Emeritus Professor F. Burton Jones. The holder of the Jones Chair is expected to play a leadership role in the department and to further grow the department’s strength in pure mathematics. The initial offer of the “chair” is limited for one five-year term. Upon faculty recommendation and campus approval, the endowed Burton Jones Chair may be renewed for additional five year terms. The full professorship is independent and subject to merit and promotion criteria of the University of California.
