Degree Descriptions
Master's Program
The requirements for our Masters degree are:
- Demonstrate proficiency at the undergraduate level in Advanced Calculus and Linear Algebra equivalent to two quarters of the corresponding classes at UCR. This requirement may be met either by taking the appropriate four classes at UCR or by having classes from another instution approved by the Graduate Advisor.
- Demonstrate proficiency at the graduate level in two of the four subjects:
- Algebra
- Complex Analysis
- Real Analysis
- Topology
This is done by either taking the corresponding graduate sequences and earning "C" or better in each class and a 3.0 GPA in each sequence, or by passing the corresponding qualifying exams at the master's level.
- Pass approximately 9 approved mathematics classes; approximately 5 of these must be from an approved list of graduate mathematics classes.
Ph.D. Program
The requirements for our Ph.D. are:
- Pass four written qualifying exams in
- Algebra
- Complex Analysis
- Real Analysis
- Topology
At least three must be passed at the Ph.D. level. One may be passed at the masters level.
The exams are based on one year sequences in the corresponding subjects, except for the Complex Analysis exam which is based on a 2 quarter sequence.
- Take four elective graduate math classes in areas that are considered more advanced than the qualifying exams.
- Pass an oral qualifying exam on a subject related to planned research.
- Write and defend a dissertation.
